Tax Manager

We're Hiring: Tax Manager Location: Karachi, Pakistan

We are seeking a Tax Manager to lead and oversee tax engagements from planning through completion, with responsibility for tax compliance, advisory, assessments, and dispute-related matters. The role will involve providing technically sound and commercially practical tax advice to clients while ensuring the quality, timeliness, and effective management of engagements.

The position requires strong technical knowledge of applicable tax laws and regulations, sound professional judgment, and the ability to manage client relationships, lead teams, and address complex tax matters in coordination with senior stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • • Lead the planning, execution, and completion of tax engagements, ensuring appropriate quality, timeliness, resource utilization, and compliance with applicable tax laws, regulations, and professional standards.

  • • Oversee the preparation, review, and timely filing of income tax, sales tax, withholding tax, federal excise tax, and other applicable tax returns, statements, and statutory filings.

  • • Review tax computations, reconciliations, supporting schedules, and engagement documentation to ensure technical accuracy, completeness, consistency, and compliance with applicable requirements.

  • • Provide tax advisory and planning services, developing technically sound and commercially practical solutions in relation to business transactions, investments, restructuring, and other corporate matters.

  • • Advise clients on direct and indirect tax matters, including applicable federal and provincial taxation requirements, and assess the tax implications of relevant business activities and transactions.

  • • Lead and oversee tax assessment, audit, notice, appeal, dispute, and litigation matters, including the preparation and review of submissions and representations before relevant tax authorities and forums.

  • • Monitor developments in tax legislation, rules, notifications, circulars, case law, and tax authority practices, and assess their implications for clients, engagements, and the wider tax practice.

  • • Provide technical leadership to tax professionals and trainees through effective delegation, supervision, coaching, and review, while maintaining appropriate standards of quality and professional development.

  • • Develop and maintain strong client relationships and serve as a key point of contact for tax compliance, advisory, assessment, and dispute-related matters.

  • • Review and finalize tax reports, opinions, presentations, technical correspondence, submissions to tax authorities, and other client deliverables, ensuring appropriate technical and professional standards.

  • • Identify and assess significant tax risks and ensure appropriate consultation, mitigation, documentation, and escalation of complex, uncertain, contentious, or high-risk matters.

  • • Monitor engagement budgets, utilization, realization, and profitability, identify significant variances, and communicate relevant matters to the Engagement Partner.

  • • Identify and develop opportunities for new and expanded tax services, contribute to proposals, engagement letters, and fee quotations, and support client retention and business development initiatives.

  • • Coordinate with overseas teams on cross-border tax engagements and undertake foreign secondments or international assignments, as required.

  • • Uphold and promote the firm's requirements relating to professional ethics, independence, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, information security, and other applicable professional and organizational standards.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • • ACA / Qualified Chartered Accountant with substantial professional experience in taxation.

  • • Minimum 6 years of relevant post-articleship experience in taxation, preferably within a professional services, accounting, or tax advisory firm.

  • • Comprehensive knowledge of Pakistan's federal and provincial tax laws, regulations, and tax administration framework.

  • • Proven track record in tax compliance, advisory and planning, assessments, audits, notices, appeals, disputes, and litigation, including complex and commercially sensitive matters.

  • • Demonstrated capability in leading tax engagements, with accountability for planning, resource allocation, technical review, client management, quality, timelines, and delivery.

  • • Demonstrated leadership maturity and professional judgment, with the ability to direct teams, develop professionals, delegate effectively, and take accountability for engagement outcomes.

  • • Proven ability to manage senior client and stakeholder relationships, including Partners, senior management, clients, tax authorities, and professional advisers.

  • • Excellent analytical, communication, report-writing, presentation, negotiation, and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to provide clear and commercially considered tax advice.

  • • Proven ability to manage multiple engagements, priorities, deadlines, budgets, and competing client requirements while maintaining professional and technical standards.

  • • Sound judgment in identifying tax and engagement risks, evaluating alternatives, resolving complex matters, and determining appropriate consultation and escalation.

  • • Commitment to professional integrity, ethical conduct, confidentiality, independence, quality, and risk-management standards.

  • • Experience in complex tax litigation, international taxation, cross-border transactions, or coordination with overseas teams will be an added advantage.
